Did you know that cleaning your glasses with your shirt can scratch the lenses? Let’s discuss how to safely clean your glasses.

Even though most of these items are typically what you have on hand, they shouldn’t be used for cleaning your glasses. EyeCare Associates does NOT recommend using:

  • Window / Glass cleaner solution

  • Bleach

  • Paper towels

  • Saliva

  • Shirts, blankets, or bath towel

Instead, USE these products:

  • Lens cleaning solution

  • Lens cleaning wipes

  • Microfiber towel

  • Soap and warm water

After cleaning your glasses, always make sure to store them in a case.

Ways to effectively clean your eyeglasses

For an even easier way to clean your glasses, many eye care offices offer lens cleaning solution. Available for purchase in travel size, cleaning solution is a great option for those who want to have clean eyeglasses while on the go.

Before purchasing a solution, ask your eye doctor for recommendations. Some lens coatings can be affected by the chemicals used in the cleaning solution.

In most cases, cleaning your glasses with lens solution is as easy as spray and dry. Always make sure to refer to the lens cleaner’s directions. Here's how to clean glasses using a lens cleaning solution:

  • Before spraying your eye glasses with solution, use a microfiber cloth to remove any on spot dust or debris.

  • Spray lens cleaning solution on both sides of your eyeglass lenses.

  • Dry your lenses with a microfiber cloth.

The fastest way to clean your eyeglasses is by using a lens cleaning wipe. Often sold in eye care centers or stores, lens wipes are typically made with rubbing alcohol. To clean your glasses, simply unwrap the wipe and gently use it on your lenses.

For an easy at-home cleaning method, dish soap and warm water is a great option. Always make sure to use lotion free soap and avoid drying with paper towels, as they can scratch your lenses. Use a clean microfiber cloth instead.

When washing your eyeglasses, follow these steps:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water.

  • Place your glasses under lukewarm tap water.

  • Place a small drop of dish soap on your fingertips. Lightly rub the soap onto the nose pads, both sides of your lenses, and the frame of your glasses.

  • Rinse your glasses with warm water, making sure to get all dish soap rinsed off.

  • Gently dry the nose pads, lenses, and frames with a clean microfiber cloth.

After you’ve finished drying them, make sure you have a safe place to store your glasses. This method only takes a few seconds to complete, making it easy to add to your morning routine.

Prevent Damage: Store Your Glasses

Apart from cleaning your glasses, safely storing them in a case when they’re not being used is also a way to prevent scratches. In addition, this further protects them from dirt, grime, and germs.
