Macular degeneration is a condition that affects the central part of your retina, called the macula. This part of the eye is responsible for sharp, detailed vision, so changes here can impact your ability to read, recognize faces, and see fine details. Even though there's no cure for macular degeneration, regular follow-up visits help us monitor the condition closely. Here's why they are essential:
Tracking Progress: Macular degeneration can change over time, sometimes slowly, but other times it can worsen more quickly. Regular visits allow us to catch any progression early, which is important for adjusting your treatment plan.
Updating Treatment: There are treatments, like certain injections or medications, that can slow the progression of the disease, especially in the "wet" form of macular degeneration. Early intervention often leads to better outcomes. Your treatment may need to be adjusted based on the stage of the disease and how it's responding.
Preventing Vision Loss: The goal is to maintain your vision for as long as possible. If we catch changes early, we have the best chance of helping you avoid significant vision loss. Missing appointments could delay treatment and make vision loss harder to prevent.
Monitoring Other Eye Health Issues: Macular degeneration can sometimes be associated with other eye problems, like cataracts or glaucoma. During your follow-up visits, we also check for these, so we can keep your overall eye health in check.
